Dad’s Secret Code
Once upon a time, a little girl and her friends thought it was great fun to pass secret messages to one another. They delighted in inventing an unbreakable code so that their messages would be safe from prying eyes.
The girl’s brother, however, equally delighted in breaking their “unbreakable” codes. Code after code was developed, only to be cracked.
After yet another secret message (about what time to meet after dinner, for instance) was deciphered, and a certain brother began to gloat about his code-breaking prowess, it was time for Dad to step in.
Thus, Dad’s Secret Code was invented. Each girl received a copy of the code and was instructed to keep it in a safe place. (It’s rumored that some brothers searched certain girls rooms in an unsuccessful effort to find the code.) The code has not yet been cracked, keeping countless get-together details safe from prying eyes.
I was recently reminded of Dad’s Secret Code when my daughter read this blog article, and responded with her own. Her article included an encrypted message, using Dad’s Secret Code. I’m sure that it’s not truly unbreakable, but I hope that amateur cryptologists will at least find it interesting.

This reminds me of a secret coded message my mom wrote for me and my sister several years ago. Only in our case, we never got the solution, and never figured out the message ourselves. 15 years later, we still don’t know what she wrote.
Someday…
For the curious, the coded message is posted here: http://happylittlecookie.wordpress.com
